{Coral & Navy} Nursery
When our sweet baby girl was born I knew I wanted to do something special for her nursery. I found this wallpaper (from spoonflower.com) and just fell in love with it! The coral and navy was exactly what I was looking for and I designed the whole room around it.
Then began the search of finding the perfect wall color. I thought I wanted to do a mint color, but because the wallpaper was so colorful, I decided to go with a gray (SW Lapland Ice) on the walls and do accents of mint, coral & gold.
Then even with switching to a more neutral wall color, the wallpaper was a still a little too busy, so I decided to break it up by adding wainscoting to two of the walls. With the help of my talented husband (and his “helper” our youngest son Fordham), we got to work installing the wall treatment.
I painted the wainscoting white (it took several coats) and it really made the walls pop! Then I decided I needed to add a little elegance to the room, so what better way to do that then add crown molding and update the light fixture?! For the molding, I wanted it to be a little more dramatic, so I added a detailed base board first, then put the crown above that. It turned out so amazing! For the light fixture, I wanted it to be something she could “grow with” and felt a chandelier (while beautiful) would be a bit much. I found a fixture at a local hardware store that was perfect, just the wrong color. So easy fix there: spray paint! I chose an old gold color to play off the other gold accents that were going in the room.
For the curtains, I fell in love with some ridiculously expensive one’s online (we are talking $100+ for ONE panel) so I decided to make my own knock-off version. I couldn’t find the exact shade of coral I was looking for at the fabric stores, but found some inexpensive coral sheets that did the trick perfectly! The ruffles on the curtains added a playful, whimsical feel to the room and it really started to come together after that!
Then came time for the finishing details. I knew I wanted a gallery wall, but wasn’t sure what I wanted to do on the opposite wall. While skimming through a design magazine I ran across a painting that I thought “I could do that”. So I bought a large canvas and some acrylic paint and went to work. You can’t really go wrong with “abstract” paintings so I had fun with it. I used all the colors in her room and the finished product turned out pretty great.
For the gallery wall I played with the layout SEVERAL times before finally figuring out the best figuration for the space.
The Final Product was all that I could hope for.
